Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. Van Gogh wrote something to that effect in a letter to his brother back in 1882. What’s true of art is true of life is true of us. In business, we have the power to transform lives and the future. But the desire for big impact can steal focus from what matters here and now, day to day. We need to get under the skin of how people feel, think and act, and channel that understanding into real change.

Brand stories we feel


We move with stories – first as individuals, then communities, and across business. Across the world, even. For 50 years, hair has been the medium with which I’ve helped brands get to the heart of stories that matter, and in turn transform business. Emotionalising brand. You see: hair is twisted from our DNA; rooted in the ways we love, long, feel and fear. Whether we move with conventions or against them, hair is who we are. Working with it – caring for it – is more than science or craft. It’s us. To shape hair is to shape mo-ments that become memories, whole identities. Moments that come to life in a world that never stays still for a moment. Look close. Think big. Feel. That’s what I say – whatever industry, whatever walk of life. Understand how strands weave together in a whole. Know how we feel in ourselves, is also how we interact with the world. How the personal is communal. How we all move here and now and over time too. Forever growing, forever changing. And as brands, we need to keep up.

I’ve been the trainee on the salon floor and the Creative Director steering a global brand. My practice is rooted as much in intuition and relationships as techniques and expertise. Because work is best done when it works on every level. When it’s felt.

Create loyalty for life

I’m best known as a curator of hair, but my MO has always been channelling passion into progress – changing perceptions across organisations, transforming behaviour and business for good. For 30 years I grew through Vidal Sassoon, a company that shaped me as much as I would go on to shape it: training among sculptors at the Royal College of Art, growing a new arm of business. When I joined Schwarzkopf at the turn of the millennium, I brought a fresh, emotional perspective to buttoned-up business. Pushing them into the world of fashion. “Excite, move, grow,” I challenged. With the teams, we created claims – ‘Together a Passion for Hair’, ‘For Every You’ – that rallied everyone behind a shared vision, a story and a voice that told it to the heart. Building loyalty. Expanding across categories. Elevating education. Making the brand more human. My title may have been Creative Director, but my role was chief storyteller – less functional and flat, more feeling. So people don’t just buy a product once, but buy into a brand for life.
